Deaf toddler’s ‘name sign’ too offensive for school, so they’ve told him to change it

A three-year-old deaf boy named Hunter has been told by his school to change the way he signs his name because his hand gestures may look like guns, his family claims.

The parents of Hunter Spanjer say they are fighting the decision by the school district in Grand Island, about three hours west of Omaha, Neb.

“Anybody that I have talked to thinks this is absolutely ridiculous. This is not threatening in any way,” his grandmother, Janet Logue, told local station KOLN.

The boy’s father, Brian Spanjer, told The Huffington Post on Tuesday: “I feel like it was an overreach on their part, and I expected a lot better from the local school district.”

He also posted a letter on Facebookthat the American Civil Liberties Union sent to the district “politely” asking it to reconsider its policy.
